hether you love your body, hate it or have some emotion in between, it is the only body you have, so taking care of it should be a high priority. Even if we “get it” with our nutrition and fitness routines, there is still another, often neglected, aspect of self-care: stress-relieving, pamper- ing, luxuriating, rejuvenating bodycare, which is our theme for February. I was in my 40s when I visited a chiropractor for the first time, and also when I had my first massage. Intense shoulder pain and lower back problems finally pushed me to go beyond

my comfort zone and my preconceived notions about what exactly would happen when I put my body in someone else’s hands. I must say it was amazing! Why did I wait so long? The first preconceived notion was what I had often heard: “Once you start going

to the chiropractor, you’ll need to keep going.” Compare getting a chiropractic adjust- ment to getting your car’s oil changed—You don’t do this just once and then think you’re good forever; It’s a continual process of care. Also, many chiropractors and other bodycare workers offer a free consultation. This allows you to check them out, visit with them, get a feel for their office and practice and see if you want to proceed or continue looking for a better fit. I did this and found a chiropractor who is just right for me. The other notion was that a 30-minute massage would seem like an eternity.

Wrong! I won’t even make an appointment for less than 60 minutes now. I also was re- luctant to have people touch me. Maybe it’s my German-Norwegian heritage, or maybe it was just a personal quirk, but my initial reservation quickly melted away. If you have the funding, do yourself a favor and make time to have some bodywork

this month. Or, if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may be able to use those funds for some of the care your body is craving. Consider it a Valentine to yourself. Make a couple’s appointment for a massage.

Visit a chiropractor. Treat yourself to an energy healing with a Reiki student or master. How about a chiropractor that can help with chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, with- out the cracking or popping of your spine? I’ve only recently heard about this; it’s called Network Spinal Analysis. You can read more about bodywork in our feature article on page 14. In our Heal-

ing Ways department, we highlight some of the different types of massage. Treat yourself, a spouse, a parent or another relative to the gift of touch and heal-

ing. Not sure where to go? Check out any of the advertisers in the magazine or ask a friend or family member. Life’s too short to carry all that stress in your body.

Here’s to your heart and health this February!
