Dear Friends, Christina Hornbach

Welcome back to a new school year! I hope things are off to a great start for you and your students. We have gotten off to a great start here at the Michigan Music Education Association (MMEA) and I have several action-packed announcements including a new logo and name, more professional development and performance opportunities, and a membership campaign.

First, MMEA is pleased to announce a new logo and name change! We are now known as the “Michigan Music Education Association.” Our new logo features a Michigan map and our new name, printed in blue and green to represent the natural beauty of our great state. The word “music” appears larger than the rest, again highlighting our focus and making a powerful statement about our mission, to advance the quality of music education in Michigan.

Second, MMEA is pleased to announce the continuing growth of our professional development and performance initiatives: Elementary Choral Festivals, Collegiate Conference, Professional Development Groups, and an upcoming Band Clinic. Please check out our website at www.mmeamichigan.org for updated information as it becomes available.

Third, I write to you encouraging collaboration with me on our Michigan Music Education Association (MMEA) GET-A-MEMBER CAMPAIGN. You are reading this because you ARE a member of MMEA. We are currently experiencing a critical time in music education at local, state, and national levels – you all know this all too well. As President of MMEA, it is my hope to demonstrate our solidarity as musicians and educators by dramatically increasing our membership, as well as developing a greater community by encouraging a stronger connection between all music teachers in all areas of music education.

You become a member of MMEA by joining our national organization, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), by going to http://musiced.nafme.org/join. When joining NAfME, you also become a member of the state music educators association of your choice (choose MICHIGAN!). Here is my pitch (yes, pun intended): Let’s use these 10 steps as a way to increase our Membership and Community. We’ll call it our “GET-A-MEMBER CAMPAIGN!” And remember, always couple these 10 steps with encouragement to join, links to the

MMEA/NAfME website and an email follow-up once he/she has joined MMEA. 1. Action: Email a friend/colleague (music teacher) from your undergraduate or grad- uate education who teaches in Michigan.

2. Action: Make a connection with a new music teacher in your area or district by inviting him/her to coffee.

3. Action: Stop by (in person) and chat with other music teachers in other buildings.

4. Action: Stop by your principal’s office and ASK for financial support for your professional development (membership dues which enable you to attend profes- sional development workshops).

5. Action: Start an initiative district-wide to have all music teachers be members of the Michigan Music Education Association and post the results! All Music Teachers in ________ (city) Public Schools are proud members of the Michigan Music Education Association.

6. Action: Have some fun and challenge a friend: First one to get 5 new members for MMEA gets to choose where the other friend takes him/her out to lunch or gets to choose what concert/movie you to togeth- er…

7. Action: Contact a music teacher who has recently retired and encourage participa- tion in MMEA for the future of music ed- ucation in Michigan – leave a legacy!

8. Action: Contact a music teacher in an area other than yours; if you are an elementary general music teacher, contact a choral or instrumental music educator.

9. Action: Attend a professional develop- ment workshop and talk (say out loud) that you are a member of MMEA and ask your fellow attendees if they are and en- courage their membership.

10. Action: RENEW your membership – check – done!

I hope you will send me a quick email (Hornbach@hope.edu) when YOU have signed up/renewed for MMEA/NAfME online so I can welcome you to MMEA. I’m climbing off the soapbox, now. I know life is busy and I know that funds are limited personally and professionally. As you begin the new school year, I urge you to make MMEA membership a priority, both for yourself and for your friends and colleagues. Let’s come together and demonstrate our friendship, community, and professional involvement in MMEA. I look forward to serving you in the next two years. My goal is a greater professional community to SERVE YOU!
