Decision makers in Michigan, as well as most states, are

increasingly demanding that educators use effective research- based practices in the classroom and provide hard evidence of student learning. Furthermore, data related to student growth and achievement rather than tenure and level of education will soon directly affect teacher retention and salary (Act 102, 2011). Teachers and researchers will need to work together to determine best practices for Michigan students, as well as valid, reliable, fair, and practical ways of assessing student learning and effective instruction. To this end, I encourage all teachers to attend the research

poster session at the Michigan Music Conference on Friday, January 18, to see some of the latest research in music teaching and learning completed by preK-12 educators, graduate students, and college professors throughout the state. You will have an opportunity to talk directly with the authors about their work and leave with new research-based strategies for your classroom. Everyone is also welcomed to attend the research

symposium on Thursday, January 17, to participate in discussions of new research. This event will include a keynote speaker, presentations of completed studies, and roundtable discussions of research in progress. The roundtable discussions are an especially valuable opportunity for authors to get feedback on action research projects, graduate theses, or dissertations. Anyone conducting research is eligible to submit

presentations for consideration in the poster session or symposium. The call for posters, papers, and proposals (roundtable discussions) can be found on the next page. Finally, I encourage you to visit the new research page on the MMEA website to find links to numerous resources, including those mentioned in this article. I look forward to seeing you in January. In the meantime, feel free to contact me if I can support your work in any way.
