instrument of their choice. Or again, I have seen six hundred sixth graders massed on a stage presenting a carefully rehearsed Christmas program.

In one junior high school music suite I have seen a ninth grade choir practicing diligently for a school program. In an adjacent room, seventh graders were discussing both popular and classic records as they were being played. The practice rooms were filled with individual students working with their instruments while an instructor was working with three violinists in the ensemble room. Down the corridor a short distance, a music teacher was working with an eighth grade social studies group on Civil War songs.

In another junior high school I have seen a full class learning to play chords on a piano, on the autoharp, or on the ukulele. I have seen them singing western songs and square dancing.

In high schools I have seen not only superb bands, orchestras and choirs, but also basic required art courses where art, music, and literature share the time. Or again I have seen music as an integral part of English courses.

I have seen classes in instrumental lessons in elementary buildings, all-city orchestras, and festivals combining music and dance.

All this and more I have seen. I am convinced that music has become of age in American education. The music teacher who

works only to produce perfection in performance fails to meet the challenge. The teacher who works only to provide broad understandings and appreciation shirks his duty.

The culture is bathed in music. The pattern is set. Whether or not we shall be known in the future as a people who were musically creative and literate can be determined only by the awareness and the drive of America’s music teachers; can be determined only by you.
