MMEA Logo & Name Change Vote
In April 2012 the membership of the Michigan Music Education Association voted to revise numerous sections of our bylaws, including changing the name of our organization from the Michigan Music Educators Association to the Michigan Music EDUCATION Association. This change was initiated at the urging of our parent organization, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). It is the opinion of NAfME, and of the MMEA Board, that changing our name from “Educators” to “Education” puts the focus of our work on our students, where it has always been in our minds and actions. This vote passed with unanimous membership support at that time, and thus our bylaws were amended to reflect those changes.
We have recently learned that this vote to change our name, while in compliance with our bylaws, was not in compliance with our original Articles of Incorporation, a document drafted and filed with the State of Michigan when MMEA was founded in 1950. Act 162, Public Acts of 1982, states that a vote to change the Articles on Incorporation of any non-profit organization must be held at a meeting of the membership. While our bylaws allow for official votes to be taken by email, online means and/or regular mail for such matters as bylaw amendments, elections, etc, our original founding documents, and thus in this case, our name itself, can only be officially
changed through a vote of all members in attendance at an announced membership meeting.
Our logo has changed, our letterhead has changed, and our unofficial name has changed—though our commitment to enhancing the quality of music education in Michigan remains unwavering, as we still strive each and every day to provide the best possible, student-centered music education to all students in Michigan. To make this name change 100% official, we need to take one additional vote on this matter at a meeting of the membership. The time and place of that meeting is hereby announced below: MMEA Membership Luncheon and Business Meeting Michigan Music Conference

Tickets to our annual luncheon are $25, but you may attend to see the professional development portion and be part of the vote for free. The MMEA board encourages all interested members to attend this meeting and cast a vote in favor of making our name change 100% official.
