The POWER of Camp! The POWER of Camp!

Most of the time it is the people who make a place memorable. At Camp Galilee in El Dorado Springs, Missouri, both the people and the place are special. Camp is a place where life long friends are made. It’s where a peaceful environment makes it easy to relax and be open to change. The rugged earth at Galilee holds years of friendship, growth, and healing. When you are happy, go to Galilee. When you are friendless, go to Galilee. When you are thick with strength, go to Galilee. When you are small with weakness, go to Galilee. When you are whole, go to Galilee. When you are broken, fl ee to Galilee.

I fi rst wrote my name in Galilee’s past as a soon to be fi fth grader. I’m certain I was that obnoxious, overly excited camper whom the counselors could barely control. Summer after summer I returned, and the energy level I spewed about decreased in severity only slightly. Even in my chaotic wake I managed to bring something back every year. The memories ranged from the joy of a new friend, or the laughter brought about by unrelenting mischief. Throughout my eight years as a camper, Galilee always made an impression--different every time.

As I got into the Senior High Leadership Camp, I still had a lot to learn. I have received some of my greatest life lessons from my days in West Cabin--along with some of my best friends. The greatest impression Galilee ever left on me happened in the summer before my sophomore year. I had been going through a point in my life where I’d been feeling empty, lost, and angry. I was fed up with the brokenness in my life. As I returned to Galilee, I prayed for change.

That summer was unlike any other. Each of the people who were there that week left an impression on my heart. In one heart-wrenching night, the whole Senior High experienced wall-shattering healing. Not one heart left the island unchanged. Along with my long anticipated healing, God gave me something else. I came to Galilee empty, and I left fi lled with the dream of becoming a pastor.

Without Galilee, I don’t know where I’d be. It has been as much of a home to me as any I can hope to fi nd in the future. Galilee has been changing lives for years because God moves freely there--through the breath of the wind in its special trees, and through the breath that is within his special people. Matthew 28:10 says, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’” No matter where in the world my life

leads me, I will always carry Galilee in my heart, and I will always fi nd my way back to it. After all, there is no place like home. www.mocamps.org
