Why Church Camp?
to church camp. A tradition was started, and I began going every summer from that point on. Wilderness had quickly become one of my favorite places in the world. At camp, I not only made new friends and had a great time, but I grew closer to Jesus more than I did anywhere else. I can easily say that I wouldn’t be the person or the Christian I am now without those experiences at camp. When my years of being a camper ran out, I became a counselor for the fi rst time. I quickly found my new passion. Being able to be there and provide other kids with the experience I had as a camper was amazing. This year, I was hired on staff at Wilderness. Getting to be here at camp all summer, I got to see God work in so many different ways. Not only through the hundreds of kids who have come to camp, but also through the adults who serve as counselors and directors. The best part of getting to see all this has been getting to see how camp has impacted those from our own church. I have gotten to see Abby Boren, Claire Moddrell, Grace Laffoon, Austin Moddrell, Lane Sullivan and Tom Beem all be campers at Wilderness this year. Being present for all of their camp experiences has been very special to me. Those who I have seen grow up in the church, I saw grow in their own walk with Christ at camp. I also had the honor of being a counselor alongside Matt and Maggie Beem. Seeing other members of my church family impact over 50 children, and plant the seed that could change the rest of their lives was something I never forget. It is not only kids that I encourage to get involved, but also the adults. I can attest that counseling at camp can change your life. Not only will you get to help kids grow in their relationship with God, but you yourself will also grow closer with God. Summer is a word that brings many things to mind. Swimming, sleeping in, hanging out with friends, and going on family vacations amongst many other things. For me, summer has always included Church Camp. In third grade I went to my fi rst year of church camp at Wilderness Retreat and Development Center in Lawson. In those three days, I had been planted with a seed. The next year, when summer drew near, I told my parents that I wanted to go back
