Wyvern December 2012 £25m funding success


Close to £25m of funding has been secured by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) to move ahead with the next waves of Understanding Society, the UK’s biggest longitudinal household panel survey.


Understanding Society, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, has been led by ISER since its inception and the continued funding confirms its success and impact so far. The prestigious, world-leading study provides rich socio-economic research material by following the changing lives, experiences and beliefs of

tens of thousands of individuals in the same households year on year.


Data gathered is used by government, policymakers and industry to look at the way UK society is changing and to plan for the future.


Professor Heather Laurie, ISER Director, said “This is extremely good news. Many congratulations to Professor Nick Buck and all the Understanding Society team who have worked tirelessly to make the study a success.

Q&A with our Vice-Chancellor


At the beginning of 2013, Understanding Society will also launch a new website to showcase the study, highlight the research carried out using its data and allow the research community to access its resources.


Two volumes of research findings have been published so far featuring work from ISER researchers and other academics across the country.


Understanding Society has already offered researchers the resources to develop new insights into a whole range of issues including teenage attitudes, employment patterns in the recession and the mobility of migrants.
