The job: IT Training Co-ordinator, Information Systems Services (ISS)
The University was seeking an IT training professional to co-ordinate and deliver IT training to staff and postgraduate students. Working closely with other departments, the successful candidate would assess training requirements and develop relevant, timely, and engaging training programmes using a modern approach, new technology, for on and offline learning. Written course materials and training manuals would also be required, as well as monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of the training delivered.
The successful candidate: Vicky Samways
Vicky took up the role in July 2012, having previously been Web Project Officer in ISS. Before that, she graduated from Essex with a BSc Computing and Management – a degree that focused on programming and technologies that drive and underpin strategic business operations. Prior to coming to Essex, Vicky took a gap year to travel around Australia.

a new one, and represents a big step on from my last role while still including the best bits too, such as helping people choose the right technology, communicating technical concepts in an understandable way, web authoring, and problem solving.
So far, I’m enjoying the responsibility and the challenge, and we’ve made some big changes already since day one. As part of this, we now use our improved website to advertise our
IT courses ahead of time, we’re creating on brand, high quality training materials for all courses and we’re supporting mixed methods of delivery and training.
We’re also raising the profile of the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification, and we’re looking at establishing clear training pathways for new staff for things like Moodle, lecture room technology and online coursework submission – with the clear aim of making sure staff are as well equipped as they possibly can be in the workplace, from day one.”
