Make a difference at half marathon
Become a ‘race maker’ and help organisers of the Colchester Half Marathon on Sunday 17 March 2013 to raise money for The Invicta Foundation – a charity dedicated to supporting injured soldiers.
Students and staff are once again being encouraged to support the annual event by
running the course or working as volunteers.
Race Director James Lewis, who works at the Colchester Campus as Market Intelligence Officer in Marketing and Student Recruitment, said: “Lots of staff and students got involved in the event earlier this year and we are expecting even more to take part in 2013. We hope to have a total of 2,000 runners and all the money raised through the event will go to Colchester-based charity The Invicta Foundation.
“We rely on the local community to support the race and to help make it happen.”
Runners who have already signed-up include Maxine Bell from Marketing and Student Recruitment, Rob Mossop from Information Systems Services, Caroline Halling from the International Office and Vicky Passingham from the Communications Office.
Rob Mossop and fiancée Beth Cummings, an Essex alumni, will also be running the Virgin London Marathon in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.
The half marathon race route travels through Colchester’s historic town centre and the surrounding countryside of Langham and Boxted.
Student Kelly Murphy came third in the Senior Ladies category of last year’s event

Keep it clean to pick up prizes
Students now have an extra incentive to keep their living spaces spick and span with the launch of the Best Community Flat competition.
In partnership with the Students’ Union and working alongside the Residents’ Support Network, Accommodation Essex is running the competition at the Colchester and Southend campuses.
The aims are to encourage students to keep their kitchens and communal areas clean, encourage community spirit and foster a positive relationship between students and housekeepers as well as raising awareness of recycling and sustainability issues.
There will be prizes, including VIP experiences, and vouchers throughout the year and a main prize for the best community flat announced in spring 2013.

News in brief
European project for widening participation
Essex is helping to create a network of excellence on widening participation in Europe.
Stakeholders and policymakers were brought together for a workshop at the Colchester Campus to discuss the current situation in the UK and ways of improving performance.
Essex is the UK co-ordinator for the European Commission-funded ExpandO project, working with leading universities across Europe.
Dr Anthony Vickers, national project co-ordinator, said: “The input from stakeholders will result in a national profile of widening participation in the UK which will be used along with the other national profile statements from other countries to generate National Action Plans. An international conference will finally disseminate the results to create a network of excellence on widening participation across Europe.”
ExpandO aims to reduce inequalities, provide adequate student support services, flexible learning paths and alternative access routes for underrepresented groups.
www.expandingopportunities.eu Alumni to network at
