News 7 Wyvern – time for a change
Essex Daily launches in New Year
In the spring term, there will be a new way for staff to find out what is going on at the University.
The launch of our new blog Essex Daily and e-newsletter Essex Weekly will mark the latest in a long line of changes to the way University news has been delivered – a process which started two months after Essex first opened its doors in 1964.
The first issue of Wyvern was published on 1 December 1964 and led with a story about the Vice-Chancellor Sir Albert Sloman’s vision for the University which had come in for criticism from a Cambridge publication.
In those founding years, Wyvern was the newspaper of the Students’ Union. Even with a cohort of just 122 students, Essex was reportedly “the first New University to produce a newspaper in its first year” according to Wyvern’s editor.
The name Wyvern was chosen for its strong connections to the University and local area. A mythical, two-legged dragon, a wyvern appears
on the University’s
crest and it is thought the name Wivenhoe derives from it.
Wyvern continued in this format into the early 1970s when the University launched its own University of Essex Newsletter, a basic summary of news and events.
Since the 1970s, what is now the Communications Office has produced a newsletter for staff and students. The Newsletter morphed in 1973 into Nexus before another name change in 1975 to Wivenhoe.
In June 1989 Wivenhoe was renamed Wyvern to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the University and the name has stuck until today. Since then it has continued to evolve with radically new designs launched in October 2001 and October 2010 when the current design first appeared.
Online blog Essex Daily will be launched to share news about everything happening on our three campuses including new developments, strategic initiatives, training and staff development opportunities, research grant announcements and new appointments, plus the successes of our staff and students. Essex Daily will be updated by the Communications Office and offers the chance to provide information to staff instantly online.
Essex Weekly – a weekly e-newsletter designed to complement Essex Daily – will also be launched so staff can get a full round-up of the key issues and stories for each week e-mailed directly to them. Essex Weekly will be printable so its contents can be shared with staff who do not regularly use e-mail during their working day.
Our dedicated student communications are also being reviewed and developed to ensure we are keeping our students informed online and through our other channels.
If you want your news, initiatives and projects included in Essex Daily and Essex Weekly or want to discuss any issues, please contact the Communications Office.
