Celebrating our scholars’ success
Undergraduate and postgraduate students who have gained scholarships to support their studies at Essex were officially welcomed by receptions held at the Tony Rich Teaching Centre at the Colchester Campus.
The events were designed to celebrate student success, offer a chance to meet donors who have supported scholarships and provide an opportunity to network with other scholarship students.
Those attending included Elizabeth Townsend, who established the Dr Paul Townsend Fund, in
memory of her husband to help international students studying mathematical sciences. This year, Dr Paul Townsend Fund scholarships were awarded to Henrik Nordmark and Kaloyan Stoyanov.

Essex welcomes first Roma scholar
As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, the Human Rights Centre has this term welcomed its first Roma student on what is thought to be a unique new scholarship.
Angel Ivanov, who will study for an MA Theory and Practice of Human Rights, hopes that coming to Essex will “prepare me for my future career as a human rights defender and an agent of social change”.
The Human Rights Centre 30th Anniversary Scholarship for Roma Students aims to equip Angel and future recipients with the knowledge
and skills necessary to provide much-needed representation for the Roma people within decision-making bodies.
Professor Rainer Schulze, Director of the Human Rights Centre, explained the importance of the new scholarship: “Even though many Roma people no longer travel, accessing mainstream education remains a significant problem, and they still face much prejudice and discrimination across Europe. As a consequence they are under-represented in the spheres of politics, law and policy-making, and they have to rely on others to speak up for them and their rights.”
David Javier Thompson, known as Javier, is delighted the prestigious US-UK Fulbright Awards Programme has offered him the opportunity to study for a MA Refugee Care at Essex.
Javier was born in Colombia before being adopted in the United States and his own experiences have encouraged his interest in exploring the experiences of internationally displaced peoples.
He said: “This is the only course of its kind in the world because it merges theory with practice. In the future I want to be a clinician, working as a psychologist, so during my course I wanted to be able to study the theory of refugee care and also have that experience of working one on one with people.”
UK and across the world can enjoy an Essex education no matter what their background.
This year the University has welcomed 320 undergraduate scholars and 250 postgraduate scholars.
