Above all I

ormative education”
professional practice and encouraged to contribute to a university that undertakes research that matters.
Our students should benefit from an outstanding campus-based student experience, with opportunities for personal development through engagement in sport, music, the arts, volunteering, and participation in clubs and societies.
Above all I want Essex to be recognised for producing graduates that are engaged global citizens and that, through talents nurtured by research-led teaching, stand out from the crowd.
How different is Essex to other
universities you have worked in? All universities are different, but two aspects stand out: first, we haven’t inherited our reputation, we have had to create it; and second, we are a university that has an incredibly powerful founding ethos set out by our founding Vice-Chancellor in the 1963 Reith Lectures, based on thinking differently about research and education.
What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the University?
Rediscovering our institutional confidence, developing a ‘One University’ mindset and putting ‘Essex First’ in all that we do.
What are your interests outside work?
I am a trustee of the Blue Cross (founded as Our Dumb Friends League) a charity dedicated to the health and happiness of pets since 1897. Abandoned or unwanted, ill or injured – the Blue Cross does what’s needed to give every pet a healthy life in a happy home.
I am also a bit of a box set addict and I am relishing the prospect of catching up on Season 5 of Mad Men.
Keeping you up-to-date
