People 9 New IT training opportunities

Staff and postgraduate students can get tips and training on using the latest technology to support their work through the University’s newly expanded IT Training team.

This term, IT Training has launched a range of new training courses through Information Systems Services, overhauled its website and delivered new online training videos. The team has also established a regular IT Training Clinic and is offering technology taster sessions hosted by Learning and Development.

There are also plans to expand the number of online training videos and screencasts available and the team would welcome ideas on what staff and students want covered.

Team changes include appointing Vicky Samways as IT Training Co-ordinator, with IT Training Manager Jerry Reid, continuing to work on a part-time basis until he retires next year. Sally Swaine has also been appointed as IT Marketing Assistant to further promote IT training opportunities.

60-second interview

Professor David Sanders

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) and Faculty of Social Sciences.

How long have you worked at the University? 39 years.

Give us an idea of what you’ve been doing this week Attending working party meetings on, for example, the faculty structure; meeting with individual members of staff to discuss their projects and problems; organising assessments of postdoctoral fellowships for the British Academy; reviewing applications for a chair in Politics at Cambridge; preparing a presentation on the University’s Research Strategy for the Senior Staff Conference this week.

Tell us three things you like about working at the University... The students, the staff, the Colchester Campus – and especially its 1960s buildings.

... and one you don’t

Having to spend most of my spare time every day fighting e-mails.

What advice would you give to a new member of staff?

Be enthusiastic in your dealings with students. If you’re required to do research as part of your contract, make sure you publish the requisite number of high quality pieces that the University needs for you to be submitted in the REF.

Finally, tell us a fascinating fact about yourself My favourite relaxation is playing folk music in north Essex pubs.
