Parking reprieve
RESIDENTSinSnodlandhavewon areprieveintheir battle to prevent draconian parking rules being im- posed on their estate.
Developers BerkeleyHomeshad intended to bring in a new en- forcement system at Holborough Lakes where parking issues have been a bone of contention for sev- eral years.
The controversial plans would
have meant the loss of20spaces, with residents being issued with parking permits for themselves and visitors. Enforcement com- pany Euro Car Parks was being brought in and fines of up to£100 would be issued if permits were not displayed.
However, after a meeting with
Berkeley Homes, residents cele- brated victory, having forced the company toshelvethe schemefor six weeks and pledge to recon- sider its proposals.
Snodland Town Council chair-
manAnneMoloney said residents had been infuriated by the clamp- down which had been due to take effect on Monday, October 22.
She said: “Although the parking spaces were only intended to be temporary when they were put in some years ago, they have be- come essential to local residents because parking on the develop- mentis so limitedand thereare so few spaces that visitors can park
in.”Following the meeting, Berke- ley promised a complete survey and a group of residents has toured the estate to try to identify places where on-street parking wouldwork.
Chatham and Aylesford MP
Tracey Crouch said: “Parking on the development has long been a genuine concern for residents. Having written toBerkeleyHomes in September regarding residents’ most recent concerns over visitor parking and a new parking en- forcement policy, I amglad to see that residents and Berkeley Homes, through constructive dis- cussion, have been able to reach an acceptableway forward.
“While I understand from the meeting, which representatives frommy office attended, that new parking enforcement proposals willbe consultedonwith local res- idents, the wider issue of visitor parking on the estate will also be reviewed.
“This is a welcome step in the
right direction and I will continue to liaise withBerkeleyHomesand residents in resolving the issues on the development.”
Berkely Homes said it had agreed to examine ways to pro- vide more parking spaces within the existing scheme, but any op- tionswouldbesubject toplanning approval.
