Banding together to make music

THE Eynsford Concert Band has been working with students at The Malling School in East Malling to encourage them to develop an ear for music and take up playing an instrument.

The school already offers a wide variety of subsidised lunch time lessons in a range of instruments and students have been gaining in confidence with their playing, following regular visits by the ECB.

The workshop pictured, organised by Brian Bennett in partnership with Tonbridge and Malling Council and through Cllr Trudy Dean, involved musicians demonstrating brass and woodwind instruments to the students, playing to them, talking about the instruments and letting them try them out,

with the view that the youngsters then consider learning one of these instruments.

Pupils heard the band play pieces such as the theme music from The Simpsons, Indiana Jones and some classical music, with the woodwind players finishing with their version of Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, played by flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone. In the brass group there was a trumpet, trombone, flugel horn, and tuba.

The pupils were inspired to have a go

and learnt how playing a musical instrument can be great fun. With so much enthusiasm around it seems likely that the school principal Carl Roberts’ ambition of having a full Malling School Orchestra one day soon has come another step closer.

SCOUTS ARE FIRST IN THE “DEN”

LARKFIELD Scouts were first to a prize of £2,000 from local county Cllr Trudy Dean’s KCC member’s fund of £10,000. Trudy chooses to award the money, which can be given to any community project in her area, at a “Dragon's Den”-style event where members of the public are the “dragons” and vote for the winning projects. A record attendance of 160 people took part in enthusiastic voting after each group had three minutes to convince the audience they should receive up to £2,000.

The other successful groups were Red Cross for setting up a Malling emergency response centre, Blacklands Scouts for archery equipment, Funky Rainbows for an after school club in Martin Square, the Malling School radio group for new equipment, and Holy Trinity Church for a staircase handrail to the church.

Cllr Dean said: "It was great to see a record number of people joining in to make sure their council tax money went to the right people. Thanks go to Blacklands Scout Group who once again provided an excellent lunch and cakes which kept us all well fuelled for the day.”

JASON TO THE RESCUE

WEST Malling businessman Jason Shave came to the rescue after reading in Malling Mail that the village’s historic pump was in need of repair and repainting.

Jason, whose company SIM Group Ltd recently moved into nearby premises in the High Street, kindly volunteered to do the refurbishment of the pump, which dates back to 1850.
