TEACHING & LEARNING
Grammarly provides detailed explanations and examples for every alert. In this way, users make informed decisions about whether, and how, to correct each potential mistake. As a result, Grammarly greatly increases the accuracy of users’ spelling and grammar while also providing learning moments, even in the case of a false alert. Te university decided to license Grammarly and pro- vide access to all students. Each month, students submit up to 60,000 papers to Grammarly, which provides 24x7 spelling and grammar help. Grammarly complements the writing center staff, who now provide students with high- er-level content and structure feedback. Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska, provides anoth- er salient example. In addition to walk-in tutoring services available for on-campus students, Peru State College offers distance tutoring to online students. Te school’s Center for Achievement and Transition Services offers Grammarly as a resource for students, and professors encourage its use, with some asking students to include Grammarly’s spelling and grammar feedback with final papers. By enhancing the curriculum with Grammarly’s auto-
mated proofreader and other instructional changes, Peru State College has seen significant improvement in senior writing scores on the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency. In 2011 and 2012 senior scores were above the national average, a testament to the campus-wide effort to improve student writing via resources like Grammarly. Automated proofreaders are growing in popularity as a supplemental tool for writing education, as demonstrated by Peru State College. A recent survey of 392 Grammarly student users provides additional perspective. According to the survey, students use Grammarly on a weekly or daily basis and mostly for school-related writing tasks such as course papers, presentations and dissertations. Te ma- jority of Grammarly users report significant benefits from using the service. Seventy percent of student respondents report that Grammarly has increased their level of confi- dence in their writing ability; 93 percent of all respondents report that Grammarly has helped them save time on their writing; 84 percent report that Grammarly has improved their grades in general; and 39 percent of students report that Grammarly has helped to increase their grades by a full grade or more. Essentially, those who use Grammarly’s automated proofreader tend to get better grades, feel more confident in their writing and save time on writing. Strong writing skills represent a foundational element of education and professional success. Automated proof- readers represent a powerful tool at institutions’ disposal, enabling students to check their own work and learn from
mistakes, anytime and anywhere. After all, who wouldn’t benefit from an extra pair of eyes?
