Terry gets chosen

Looe’s Terry Wright has been selected to represent the UK at the next World Transplant Games to be held in South Africa in 2013.

And while he says he is very pleased, he says that the financial outlay of attending the games is a big undertaking for him, as he is now retired.

‘I hope to attend in South Africa, but like all these events costs are getting greater each time,’ said Terry.

‘When I was working I was sponsored by my employer,’ he explained. ‘I am going to try to go – but my wife will not be able to come with me.’

This weekend Terry will travel to Coventry for his first training event with the UK team.

The 2013 event attracts teams representing at least 60 countries, says Terry, and its main purpose is to promote the use of donor cards.

‘The donor system is desperate for donated organs,’ said Terry, who spoke of how he still keeps in mind the family of the local person killed in a car accident from whom he believes he received his kidney 20 years ago.

The games will be Terry’s last opportunity to compete in the 60-69 years age group.

RNLI rewards its ‘tireless’ volunteers

Eight volunteers from Looe RNLI have been presented with awards by the charity for their long service and dedication.

With Christmas in mind

Lifeboat operations manager David Haines, chair Robbie Alberry, and fundraisers Lynda Damms,Anne Hodgkinson, Janet Ward, Margaret Fiddik,Allan Newman and David Parker were each presented with an accolade by RNLI area manager Dave Nicoll.

Also receiving his award at the presentation was John Evans from the Rame Peninsula RNLI branch.

Mr Nicoll said the presentation at Looe was

a great way of thanking volunteers who work tirelessly to support and raise funds for the charity.

‘Volunteers are the lifeblood of our charity, we simply couldn’t do without them, and this event was all about saying a very big thank you to them for their continued support,’ he said

‘This year’s award-winners represent a range of volunteers from fundraisers, to those who are part of the lifeboat station management group, or offer special skills like photography. They all perform an essential service for our charity.’
