N ANY DAY LAST YEAR, and in any division, you could have walked the halls and peeked into rooms where you
would see students who were engaged, creating, making things happen, and working together. What’s more, they were happy being at school.
That is the most important thing to know about what was happening last year at Oregon Episcopal School. At every level, students interacted individually and in small groups with our dedicated faculty and staff and with their peers to seek answers to intriguing questions. The children grew physically, mentally, and in their ability to understand and positively impact the world around them.
THIS GROWTH AND PROGRESS was due in no small part to the generosity of those who have donated to the OES Fund, supported the auction, contributed to the endowment, and volunteered for the school. Those gifts supplement tuition to enrich the program at all levels and allow the school to enroll qualified students who otherwise could not afford an OES education.
PLANNING FOR NEW FACILITIES first required a new iteration of our campus master plan and identification of the most critical improvements. The most urgent need was determined to be a new facility to serve our younger students, including additional collaborative, project, and interdisciplinary work spaces as well as outdoor learning and play spaces. Continued planning work for a new Beginning School/Lower School building will proceed during the next year.

AS THE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN WORKING toward their futures, groups of adults have been meeting to plan for the future of the school. We have progressed toward the strategic goal of enhancing the visibility of OES in the community through improved branding and marketing so we can continue to attract highly qualified students. We have defined the framework for our curricular program by formulating the OES Essential Competencies, a blueprint that is built on the concept of 21st century skills—those proficiencies students will need to thrive in their future. And we have identified the improvements in our facilities that are needed to support student mastery of the Essential Competencies.
DURING THE COMING YEAR, we also will complete our self-study for renewing our accreditation through the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS). We will continue improving the coordination of our curriculum from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade. And, as always, our students will continue to ask questions, seek answers, and present their findings. They will work individually and with each other to create new works of art and literature and to build their physical strength through our PE, Athletic and Outdoor
programs. They will address spiritual and moral issues, and they will use their developing powers to make this world a better place for all of us. As I begin my second year at OES, I am thankful to be in a community with these talented youngsters and with all of you who are helping them grow by providing an environment where they can reach their highest potential. I look forward to the coming year with enthusiasm for the good work we are doing.
