office, I realize how great it is to have my own enterprise. It was created from ideas I thought valuable to our soci- ety. I went out with excite- ment and determination and followed through with excel- lence and have created my own success.

What is most important to recognize is that it is a lot of work. As my friend Forrest Tardibono, owner of Sun Pacific Mortgage & Real Estate said in our talk..."It's a way of life, not so much dedi- cation". I have to agree fully. When running a business you are already dedicated. Endless hours are spent trying to fig- ure out how to be even more successful, both as a person and as an owner. Another truth I find to be true is that anyone can do it if they really want

to. From the time I was 7, selling cherries on the corner of highway 116 & Frei Rd in Sebastopol to today, I start- ed over 20 different types of businesses. Mowing lawns to cartoon illustrations to adver- tising design service to even a greeting card business only seemed to enhance my desire to be an entrepreneur, even though many of them did not always work. I've taken

over 135 units of college classes starting in my 11th grade year of high school, learning what I thought would help me with running or starting my next venture. I wanted to be a mil- lionaire by the time I was 21. That was my goal. Soon I realized I needed to change that to 25. Ooops, let's just say by the time I was 35. I read many interesting books and one in particular stated that most people usually didn't make it big until they were

ages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.

Origin:French, from Old French, from entreprendre to undertake.

It was no longer about the money, but the challenge and the risks one had to take. But now, most importantly it was the journey and what we are learning to refine our character while running our enterprise. I finally realized it cannot, and does not happen over night. But the shear desire to make enough to free up time to go enjoy all the awe- some adven- tures life has to offer keeps

it fresh. To be able to have enough time to spend with the family and the kids. Because I chose my family first, instead of the big bucks first, I feel a sense of accomplishment without having made detri- mental sacrifices to those I truly love. This in turn has created a form of happiness that seems to grow on itself. After meeting with Dee

Skikos, brother of Andy of Andy's Produce Market, I realized that these are all the people I really respect because of what they stand for and that family comes first. And an individual can still simultaneously!

succeed This paper is a reflection of

how I view life in general...It's Great! Challenging at times, but very stimulating. Overall, there is an art to being a self starter & entre- preneur. Some of it is luck, but most of it is just showing up. It is relationships, honesty and the ability to see that there are no competitors in life... only teachers. I've been told many times to know who the competition is...but truthfully, I look way beyond that. To me it is only a brick in the foundation and very helpful in many ways, every single day. Besides, there is only one me, one Upbeat Times...and some- day there may be an Upbeat Times in every city across the planet. -May this issue find you well!
