WINTER HARBOR & EASTPORT – Usu- ally by the third week in August the lobster racing season is over, but not anymore. One of the more fun events associated with lobster boat racing, is the Pirate Festival in Eastport, held on Sunday the weekend after Labor Day. Normally that would be the only race, but this year we also had Winter Harbor scheduled the day before since they had canceled their original races due to fog back on 11 August. The Winter Harbor races would now be the last points race of the year and for some they needed to be there to either qualify or gain points on their competitors. There was also a big prize, a Chevrolet extended-cab pick-up truck, being offered at Winter Harbor and that brought out a number of boats.

When I arrived at Winter Harbor, the day was not looking very good with a lot of fog and strong wind out of the southeast. We knew that there were not many options, so the race committee was going to make sure they did everything they could to run that day. With signups done and the 66 racers and spectator fl eet out on the side of the course, the fog began to lift just enough to see both ends of the course. However the wind, which was blowing about 20, was going to be a factor.

There were some that opted not to brave the elements, especially those from a great distance. LISA MARIE, owned by Gary Genthner of Round Pond, came the furthest.

He was looking to capture the top spot in Diesel Class I.

Just before we headed out onto the race course I received a call from Galen Alley, owner of FOOLISH PLEASURE, who thought he needed this race to be qualifi ed for the season’s overall racing. He had al- ready competed at four other events and only needed three to qualify so he opted not to go overboard. It would have been an interesting day had he tried to run in these conditions. I was on the start boat for the fi rst two races and for them this was going to be a wild run. In Gasoline Class A – 4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over there were two boats and just one in Class B - V-8 up to 375 cid, 24 feet and up so they were combined. First over the line was James West’s INDIAN OUTLAW, followed by Walter Rich’s FROSTY PUN- KIN, and Colyn Rich’s WIDE OPEN. So the winner of Class A was INDIAN OUTLAW and second went to WIDE OPEN. In Class the winner was FROSTY PUNKIN. In Gas- oline Class C, V8, 376 to 502 cid, 28 feet and over, three boats came to the line and at the fi nish it was Chad Libby’s NIGHTMARE fi rst, Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND, second and Fred Young’s WANDA LOU third.

diesel classes. The fog threatened to come in as we started the diesel classes, but then it went back out a bit and then slowly lifted until we had sunny. It was still blowing with gusts up to 25 to 30 knots. In Class A, Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet, for boats were entered and this was won easi- ly by David Grant’s EASY MONEY; second went to Thomas Young’s ETHAN R., and third was Avery Scott’s RESILENT. Seven boats came to the line for Class B, Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over, and this was won by Kit Johnson’s MR. LUCKY with Cameron Crawford’s RICH AMBITION second and
