PLAYWRIGHT LUCY KIRKWOOD tackles the hot topics of privacy and the portrayal of women in the media with her Royal Court debut, NSFW, featuring Mighty Boosh star Julian Barratt, Janie Dee and Henry Lloyd-Hughes (best known for playing bully Donovan in The Inbetweeners). For the uninitiated, NSFW is internet slang meaning “not safe for work” – online material that the viewer may not want to be seen accessing in a public or professional setting.
Royal Court associate director Simon Godwin directs the play. “The show is partly set in an imaginary lads’ magazine called Doghouse and partly set in a women’s magazine, Electra,” he says. “It’s asking the audience about the relationship between men’s magazines and women’s magazines, what are they like compared to each other and how are they both responsible for how we see women today.
“The play is an oblique account of journalistic responsibility and the way that we maintain or fight for our privacy in the contemporary world.”
The Royal Court is dedicated to supporting and developing new writing and has helped nurture talent from John Osborne to Joe Penhall. NSFW is the latest play created by a young writer to make its way onto the Royal Court stage.
