V&A

The Victoria and Albert Museum’s major new exhibition, Hollywood Costume, explores the role costume designers play in helping to create characters on screen. More than 100 costumes will be on

show, from Dorothy Gale’s gingham dress in The Wizard of Oz to Indiana Jones’s Raiders of the Lost Ark outfit to the latest Batsuit from The Dark Knight Rises.

Many of the costumes are from private

and archival collections and have never been part of a public display before. The exhibition is spread over three galleries. The first, Act I: Deconstruction, looks at the creative process and the link between clothing and identity, whether the designer is coming up with something that’s obviously a costume – for a period drama, for example – or more subtle apparel.

Sketches, script pages and photographs of costume fittings give an insight into the designer’s craft.

The second gallery, Act II: Dialogue, explores how designers, directors and actors collaborate on characters, focusing on director/designer pairings such as Alfred Hitchcock and Edith Head, who worked on 11 films together. The “Art of Becoming” features specially commissioned interviews with Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep about the importance of costume, together with clothing from some of their most famous roles.

In the last gallery, Act III: Finale showcases some of cinema’s iconic costumes, from films including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Some Like It Hot, the Harry Potter series and Spider-Man.

The exhibition has been curated by a team led by Deborah Nadoolman Landis, whose design credits include The Blues Brothers, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Trading Places and Coming to America, for which she gained an Academy Award nomination.

Hollywood Costume is at the V&A from October 20- January 27. Tickets £14, concessions available. T: 020 7907 7073.
