materials UPDATE MORE SPRINGS AT THE TOP
By Kate Vasko Bedding manufacturers continue to incorpo- rate new innerspring and coil technology into their mattresses. The latest, mini coils ranging from 1–2 inches in height offer added comfort and support. Often used as the top layer in the mattress, the smaller, microcoils reduce partner disturbance and create a more supportive sleep surface. The following three companies are us- ing these smaller coils with great success in their sleep systems.
Gold Bond—The company’s innovative Sacro- Support mattress includes Leggett & Platt’s Softech Mini coil system. The mattress’ unique double-sided pillow top design has the 1.5 inch coils on both sides and adds a plush feel to its luxurious Duchess and Baroness mattresses.
Naturepedic—Available in its Ensemble, Concerto, and Symphony adult mattresses, the layers of spring-on-spring contraction
allow for a top layer of smaller comfort coils. In addition, the coils are individu- ally wrapped with organic cotton for multi- zone support. These smaller comfort coils add to the comfortable feel of the organic luxury mattresses.
Therapedic International—Unveiled in Las Vegas, the Agility Collection has a combination of micro-pocket coils and gel- infused memory foam for a more responsive sleep surface. The thousands of microcoils in each mattress in this hybrid offers sleep- ers a combination of the latest gel and foam materials with the supportive inner spring feel. The ultra mircocoils are manu- factured by Hickory Springs’ U.K. partner, Spinks Springs. Low–profile innersprings are helping mat-
tress makers differentiate their beds with customized feels. ✤
HICKORY SPRING INTRODUCES BIO-BASED VISCO GEL FOAM
Hickory Springs’ goal for the Preserve program is to
eventually eliminate all petrochemical products from its foam products.
By Gretchen Kast Hickory Springs expands its portfolio of Pre- serve products with the introduction of a bio- based Visco gel foam. “Demonstrating our commitment to creat-
ing foam products that are bio-based, par- tially replacing oil with natural and renew- able resources, we’ve now added the cooling power of gel to Preserve, providing a truly restful night’s sleep,” said National Product Manager of Bedding Products, Brent Limer. “While our foam comfortably molds to the body, it’s actually more durable than oil- based foams meaning fewer body impres- sions. In 2005 when we introduced bio-based foam we knew it wasn’t a fad or a trend— we’re still proving that.” Unlike beaded gel products, Preserve VG’s gel is evenly mixed throughout the entire
foam matrix. Gel is swirled into the foam compound for added comfort, cooling and performance. Since VG’s gel is polyurethane, it is molecularly locked into the polyurethane foam structure. This ensures the gel will re- main locked into the foam without the chance of shaking, falling or leaking out of the foam. The North Carolina company’s develop-
ment of Preserve foams came at a time of rising petroleum prices and concerns about raw material availability. Flexible poly- urethane foam chemistry incorporates a renewable, natural ingredient allows for a kinder foam product, with stability in both pricing and supply. Hickory Springs’ goal for the Preserve program is to eventually eliminate all petrochemical products from its foam products. Visit
