Direct to DISNEYLAND

BY STEVE PRATT I

’m pretty sure my kids don’t understand some of the sacrifices I’ve had to make to

visit Disneyland. The first time I made my own way to Disneyland I drove for 21 hours straight in a car that broke down every time I passed an exit with the number 6 in it. I got to spend a grand total of one day at Disneyland and then I had to drive another 21 hours home. The ratio of travel time to Disney time was terrible but I didn’t care because I got to be in Disneyland.

My family on the other hand has been a bit spoiled. We may live 1100 miles away from the Happiest Place on Earth but by getting to the airport early and taking a couple of short flights, we can have dinner with Mickey and Minnie that same night. It’s so easy and convenient that we spent over 35 days at Disneyland last year. When you actually go to the trouble of looking up which food group churros would fall into you know you’re a Disneyland regular.

Earlier this year however we decided that we would take a little break from Disneyland. We still love the Mouse but there are so many other places to explore in the world that we thought it would

be a good idea to vary our destinations a little. So far this year we’ve been to Washington, D.C., Miami and New York; we’ve been having a great time! Sure we’ve missed Disneyland a little but our new destinations were enthralling us and we always knew that something would happen to draw us back to Southern California. Something we just couldn’t resist.

Something like a non-stop flight! Starting in December, Kelowna is getting a non- stop flight to Los Angeles and I get the feeling that we’ll be returning to Southern California. No longer will we have to settle for having dinner in Disneyland… We can make it by lunch. Heck if we really wanted to, we could be back on a return flight to Kelowna by dinner and have everybody home, tucked in before their bedtimes. Actually that sounds like a great challenge although I suspect that trying it might leave me on the search for a good divorce lawyer. It’s probably best that we stay at least a couple of days.

Really though, I don’t think we have much choice but to start back up with Disney. When somebody takes a trip that used to take 21 hours, then offers to show you how to make it in 3, you have to go. I mean what’s 3 hours? I’ve seen the line for Space Mountain take longer than that. I spend longer than that waiting for my daughter at her dance class every Tuesday. Now, I can take that three hours and find myself i n Disneyland? That sounds like a good trade to me. Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to live closer to Disneyland. Now it seems I do.

This year WestJet is offering scheduled service from YLW to Los Angeles (LAX) weekly on Saturdays from November 3 to April 27. And on December 19th, United Airlines begins year-round, daily non-stop service between Los Angeles and Kelowna and two flights on Saturday.
