RUNWAY REPAVING PROJECT FINISHES ON TIME AND ON BUDGET

For the last three months residents surrounding the airport have been very understanding as night crews and vehicles were operating between 11 pm and 5:30 am when most people are trying to sleep. The project included repaving 7300 feet of runway (the 2008 addition of 1600 feet was unaffected) as well as a complete rehabilitation of most of the taxiways.

The last repaving of the runway occurred in 1986, so with 26 years of wear and tear YLW’s runway received some much needed resurfacing. The airport always tries to be a good neighbour and did its best to notify area residents of the project and keep them informed of the timelines. YLW appreciated the patience and understanding of all affected. The good news is our runway will be good to go for many more years.

FREQUENT TRAVELLER? Line up with your NEXUS pass at YLW

New initiatives aimed at making air travel more convenient for Canadians travelling was the aim of the Federal government’s recent announcement at YLW.

Now for NEXUS members there is a dedicated entrance which allows card holders to proceed directly to the front of the screening line resulting in shorter wait times. These screening procedures will enable the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to reduce wait times for travellers by using practices already established in Canada’s larger airports.

“Our Government is committed to ensuring the security of Canadians travelling within our borders and abroad while reducing wait times at screening,” said Ron Cannan. “Canadians will now be able to use their NEXUS card at more airport security checkpoints in Canada, including here in Kelowna, making security screening faster and more convenient.”

NEXUS is a joint Canada Border Services Agency/U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that expedites the border clearance process for pre-approved, low-risk travellers. Using a NEXUS card at pre-board security screening is an additional benefit for NEXUS members.
