THE PLACE IS CHALLENGE RANCH. THE TEACHERS ARE HORSES. Hearts, Opening ONE CHILD AT A TIME BY DUTCH HENRY PHOTOS BY RON TOMCZAK

General Rommel, a Challenge Ranch equine resident for the past 10 years, carries his young rider around the cross-country

course, which features obstacles, drops and water hazards.

O

n a small ranch near San Diego, California, big challenges are answered every day. It’s a ranch where children from foster and group homes who may not have dreams, love or trust as part of their vocabulary

learn that the world is not such a scary place. The gentle teachers there show them they can have dreams, love and trust, not just in their vocabulary but in their lives, too. The place is Challenge Ranch. The teachers are horses.
