front of the compact engine. The result is a Tardis-like interior just as big as that

of Volkswagen’s far pricier Polo supermini. Luggage space? You don’t get quite as

much as was offered in this car’s predecessor, the Fox, but open the glass tailgate, apparently styled to look like a flat-screen TV, and you’ll find 251 litres of space or 951 litres with the seats folded. Up front, a three-spoke steering wheel fashioned from light magnesium frames an instrument cluster of refreshing simplicity. A pity, though, that it’s adjustable only for height, not for reach. The interior design with its large speedometer is clean and easy to get to grips with, featuring high-gloss back trim and a compact centre pod for many of the minor controls. If you’re wondering about the name, so

was I. It is taken from the middle two letters of Lupo, the badge given to Volkswagen’s most recent European-built city car. And in terms of the outlay, you’re probably looking at somewhere between £8,000 and £11,000 for the normally aspirated 60 and 75PS 1.0-litre petrol models, offered in three main trim levels: Take up!, Move up! and High up! Th e r e ’s a choice of three- or five-door body styles and the option of a semi-automatic robotised clutchless 5-speed gearbox as an urban alternative to the 5-speed manual. Bear in mind that the bottom end of the pricing spectrum gets you a very basic car, so most will want to find an extra £1,000 to get themselves into mid-spec trim, a level which for an extra £360 or so also gives you

The tailgate resembles a flat-screen TV.

‘The engine’s rasp suits this car’s offbeat charisma’

the option of specifying a useful BlueMotion Technology fuel-saving tweaks to the 60PS engine.

Standard on the High up! (and optional on the Move up!) is this car’s cleverest touch –

The new SsangYong Korando Limited Edition

the Maps & More personal infotainment system with its sat-nav, music-playing, Bluetooth E-phone and eco-driving functions.

On top of that, the only extra feature I’d really want to add would be the accident-saving emergency braking system which will warn you of impending collisions at urban speeds and, at under 19mph, even brake the car for you. In summary, this is the very essence of a small, affordable Volkswagen, a high quality class-less car very much in the mould of the original Beetle.
