Horse-mad Elliott learns and earns
Ye s says Sian Hampton, principal at Bluecoat Academy
Bluecoat has a long tradition of outstanding education in the City of Nottingham. Becoming an academy has enabled Bluecoat to build on strong foundations and become even better. The improved finances and greater freedoms allowed for academies have helped us to become even better and provide a better experience for the young people we serve.
As a Christian faith academy we have worked closely with the Diocese of Nottingham and Southwell to retain our distinctively Christian ethos and to ensure it is preserved well into the future.
Our mission to serve the
children in Nottingham and its surrounding area has not changed and neither has our ambition to provide excellent, high-quality education. What has altered is the freedom to pursue this ambition and improved funding to make the vision we have for our students become a reality. Bluecoat has seen its results rise year on year for the last three years. We predict another rise again this August. As an academy we can take these achievements to the next level by being able to afford to reduce some class sizes and retain extra support staff to help and encourage students. Bluecoat has invested considerably in the enrichment experience for students through its Thursday afternoon programme of activities such as ice skating, community projects and horse riding. We believe that all our students should be given
opportunities to experience a wide range of activities that are not simply linked to examination success.
Our academy freedoms have
allowed us to be creative and flexible about the curriculum. This in turn has led to an expansion in our foreign visit programme and we now have students visiting the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the Dominican Republic on a Post
Elliott Green (pictur ed) developed a passion for horses from a young age. Now 18, he is fulfilling his dream of working with and learning about his favourite animal while getting paid. Elliot, of Hucknall, is doing an apprenticeship in horse care at Stephenson College and will finish in October after 21 months of study. He works with horses at Broadview Riding School in Bestwood Village when not at college. The former Holgate Comprehensive pupil, said: “At school I was
dyslexic and I put all the effort in that I could. When it came to the choice of sixth form, then university, I didn’t think that was for me, so I chose the apprentice route and its been perfect. “The earning and learning aspect is nice but what I enjoy the most
is how peaceful it is to be around horses. When I was about 14 I read a book about travellers in the 1950s which sparked my interest and led me to do some voluntary work experience.” Elliot added: “In five years’ time I see myself in a good paid job, probably working with horses, and I think my apprenticeship with Stephenson College has set me up well with all the skills I need. Salterford House celebrates Jubilee
Riding opportunities at Bluecoat.
16 charity visit with a Christian charity Mission Direct, exchanges to France, Italy, Germany, Austria, staff visiting Jamaica, guests arriving from China and many, many more. This is a sample of just some of the opportunities that our new status has afforded us.
The half term break was heralded at Salterford House School with a Diamond Jubilee celebration. Children, staff, parents and friends sang jubilee songs and sent 100 Union flag kites into the sky. There were stalls and games, giant trampolines and an ice cream seller who proved to be very popular despite the weather; face painting, nail painting and a huge (indoor) picnic were other highlights of the day. The afternoon began with a treasure hunt, the younger children assisted by the older ones. The day ended with prizes awarded for the essay, poetry and art competitions and the day’s games. Other events in June included a field trip to Yorkshire, the Midlands Athletics event in Birmingham, a trip to Newark to see the Olympic torch and, best of all, the ISA Olympic Festival of Sport to be held at Nottingham University. Ben Wellings was chosen to read the oath at the Opening Ceremony – a great honour for the school and an opportunity for our pupils to show that they excel in sport as well as academics. Just eight miles from Nottingham city centre, yet surrounded by beautiful woodland, Salterford House is a unique school. With small classes, one-to-one tuition for special needs pupils and scholarships for the gifted, independent education is closer than you think.
