The range of 38 skills check activities demonstrate how authentic workplace materials can be used as the basis for a detailed discussion of literacy, language and numeracy skills. Each is accompanied by guidance notes and record sheet to record an employee' s support needs. Whilst they are essentially assessment tools, they cover a range of topics that are very relevant to the content of induction programmes delivered to meet the 'refreshed' induction standards and so could be used by trainers as an interesting starting point for discussion activities in training sessions. They cover topics such as -
abuse body language communication skills fire safety role of the worker confidentiality incident reports politeness safety signs

As a framework to record their observations trainers on induction courses may like to use a checklist to record the strengths and needs of new staff so that after induction any staff development needs are recorded and provide a basis for whatever model of support would be appropriate.
If staff have ESOL needs a version of such an observation checklist
could have a particular focus on some basic language and communication needs for care work e.g.
key areas of vocabulary e.g. numbers, days, months, foods, clothes parts of the body, medical conditions
making everyday conversation making requests politely
