Written literacy and numeracy assessments

As noted in the introduction above, trainers and managers working together on AIMER funded courses at Two Counties Training were keen to use assessments that were relevant to the job roles and the demands of the induction training their new staff would be given. They therefore developed and piloted two short, contextualised assessments that reflected the particular skills required by job roles in domiciliary care. These were based on sample questions taken from the wide range of skills check activities developed by Care Skillsbase. ( see later in this section)

Given the range of literacy and numeracy needs amongst applicants generally the two ten question assessments were designed to be completed by all staff at job interview but in order to reflect the needs of those staff with ESOL needs the early questions of the literacy assessment included reading activities at Entry Level. whilst later questions explored higher level writing skills at Level 2. All the questions in both assessments were contextualised to reflect the skills required for everyday literacy and numeracy tasks in domiciliary care.

The literacy assessment covered -

 reading safety signs  understanding a phone message  spelling  use of full stops  use of capital letters  updating a care plan

The numeracy assessment covered -

 working out change  adding and subtracting  reading a scale in kg  estimating a volume in millilitres  working out a simple dosage  using the 24 hr clock  rounding up a calculator answer  using decimals in metric units
