back page FROM THE PUBLISHER
While preparing for this issue of BEDROOM magazine, I am reminded that this month marks my second year at the helm as this magazine’s publisher. It’s been an amaz- ing experience and one I could not have imagined during my first home furnishings market in High Point, NC slightly more than eight years ago. In the past two years, we have seen im- pressive product
launches, ranging from
Serta’s iComfort and Spring Air’s Breathe mattress collections to E.S. Kluft & Co.’s Aireloom King 7x7’ mattress and Fabrictech International’s PureCare encasement
pro-
grams, along with strong growth in acces- sory and adjustable base sales. This pe- riod also marked the introduction of more racy marketing approaches, such as Sealy’s “Whatever You Do in Bed, Sealy Supports It.” and The Better Sleep Council’s “Stop Sleeping Around” campaigns. We have watched the industry begin its
rebound from challenging economic times during which Serta out performed Sealy, making it the number one bedding pro- ducer in the United States, Spring Air Som- mex Corporation rescued Natura World from the Canadian bankruptcy courts and Tem- pur-Pedic slashed its earnings projections for the first time in more than five years. Meanwhile, E.S. Kluft & Co. and others, who
mostly sell higher-priced mattresses, ex- perienced unpredicted growth, as has the newcomer in the specialty sleep producer, Pure LatexBLISS. In BEDROOM, we have continued our tra- dition of covering current products and in- novations, trends in marketing, and the lat- est information across the industry. But, we have also embraced change by introducing a new, more reader-friendly layout; launch- ing a new website and social media pres- ences on Twitter and Facebook; producing a digital edition that readers can share and publishing two annual Companies to Watch supplements. In addition, we took to the road to tour the Shifman Mattress Company, Gold Bond Mattress, Latex International, Pure LatexBLISS and Wright of Thomasville factories, along with a number of retail showrooms in the Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, DC areas. I thank the industry I entered by chance
and our dedicated publishing team, led by Kyle Harrington, BEDROOM’s associate pub- lisher and Kate Vasko, the magazine’s man- aging editor, for helping me to grow the magazine over the past two years. I couldn’t be more pleased with what we’ve learned and done in the process or more excited about what’s to come! Looking forward to the road ahead!
