Liz Rowlinson asks why this Turkish resort continues to attract British buyers in their droves

f there’s a place in Turkey where you’ll fi nd more well-heeled Britons than anywhere else, it’s probably the small resort of Kalkan near
Fethiye. It’s not the most obviously glitzy place on that vast Turkish Riviera – that tag would go to Bodrum, with its big quotient of Istanbul high-rollers and its new Aman resort – and it’s not the most affordable, by a long straw. No, it seems to be a combination of natural beauty, the fact that it is too far from an airport to attract the package tours (90 minutes), and plenty of high-standard restaurants that don’t seem to have destroyed the feel of a small, friendly town. “The thing is, it’s a bit tucked away,
and although there are a lot of British here, it hasn’t sold its soul, and it’s not too commercialised, like Bodrum or Fethiye,” says Andrew Lever, a 58-year-old homeowner, who fi rst came to Kalkan 25 years ago. “I think it is still as Turkish as it used to be, despite the fact that prices are a little higher than elsewhere – which I like –
