It’s been a turbulent few years but it seems that our love affair with Spain is far from over. The recession hasn’t dampened everyone’s dream of a holiday home on the
Costas, and it’s not just wishful thinking by those of us in the business. This month, fi gures from the Spanish statistics offi ce showed that British
buyers still lead the way amongst overseas purchasers, forming 20 per cent of the 22,260 investors during 2011. Further, Conti, the overseas mortgage specialist, reports a 33 per cent increase in Spanish mortgage enquiries over May and June this year, when compared with the equivalent months’ fi gures last year. Clearly not everyone is a cash buyer, and with UK mortgage rates still so low,
savvy savers are able to make the most of the great deals in the eurozone. Of course the strength of the pound is boosting British buying power - at the time of writing it is at a four-year high of 1.26 to the euro. So, apart from directing you to our “bailout bargains”
feature on page 59, I’d also recommend checking out the stunning Italian islands (page 47), the beautifully rustic Corsica (page 70) and yet another island with our interview with Mike Gatting on life in Barbados (page 54).
