Brownies get busy making fake eggs


Brownies in Looe have been helping out in a project which aims to reduce the number of attacks by aggressive herring gulls in the town – by making hundreds of dummy eggs to be placed in the seagulls’ nests.


This is the third year that the 4th Looe Brownies have been involved in the project, initiated by Martin Gregory, Looe town councillor and chair of the environment and public protection committee.


The girls’ job is to weigh out the correct amount of sand to fill the fake eggs and then reseal the two halves with glue.


It is then over to contractors to carry out the job of swapping newly-laid real eggs for dummies, often involving a climb up onto a roof while avoiding the nest’s hovering owners.


The gulls do not spot the difference, and will sit on the nest for the remainder of the season.
