Peptides
Peptides have been studied for many years. However, recently they have become hugely popular within the skin care industry. So, what are peptides? Essentially they are short chains of amino acids, like building blocks that together make up a protein such as collagen, a primary component that acts as a support structure to skin cells and keeps skin supple and thick. These ‘mini proteins’ are active molecules that can improve the appearance of skin and smooth out wrinkles. Due to the size of peptides, they are able to penetrate the skin to reach the deeper layers.
When natural collagen is broken down into peptides within the skin, a signal is triggered for the skin to start producing more collagen. Applying peptides directly to the skin is a way to signal to the skin to produce more collagen naturally. Peptides function as naturally occurring chemical messengers. In addition to signaling collagen production, some peptides cause the nerves to relax and the result is wrinkle reduction and mild ‘botox-like’ effect.
One thing to consider is that peptides must be stabilized to prevent them from further breaking down within a topical cream as this renders them useless. They must also be suspended in a cream of correct composition allowing penetration of the skin. One that merely sits on the surface will be of no benefit.

Pentapeptides Pentapeptides are made of five peptide units linked together. Some examples found in skin care include Palmitoyl Pentapeptide, also called Matrixyl, and Myristoyl Pentapeptide.
