As the 2012 Festival of Arts makes plans for this summer’s celebration of its 80th
Anniversary, its neighboring partner, Pageant of the Masters, is readying for its latest celebration of art in “living pictures”—tableaux vivants—to be performed nightly in Laguna Beach’s Irvine Bowl, beginning Saturday, July 7. The theme of this year’s program is The Genius. If you haven’t been before, then this is the year to go. Everyone makes a splash
for their 80th year celebration and the Festival of Arts is already renowned for be- ing stellar! Part and parcel of The Festival of Arts is the Pageant of the Masters—a wonderful night of live theatre with a live narrator, a professional 30-piece orches-
tra and hundreds of volunteers who make up the cast and backstage support teams as they recreate a living version of great works of art. What has remained unchanged during the pageants 79-year history Director
Challis Davy notes, “Despite advances in technology, our very ‘hands on’ way of building tableaux will never change. There is no replacement for the time- consuming, trial-and-error work that is done by the team. Set construction, set painting, making costumes, applying
makeup...These tasks are exacting and must be done the old fashioned way. It’s a proverbial labor of love.” Come marvel at the craftsmanship and creativity.
