SO MUCH TO BE PROUD OF…

We have completed another seasonal circle… Summer is here again and it promises to

be a typical SoCal July full of sunshine and fun, with a myriad of potential activities—the list long with many choices! We have so much to be grateful for and in many ways this year has been a banner one

for us in the LGBT world: the end of DADT and the ruling by the Federal Appeals Court that DOMA is unconstitutional—paving the way for the highest court in the land to hear our arguments. Supreme Court here we come! Celebrating the nation’s birthday is another great way to gather with friends and the

Fourth of July has always been a favorite for me since childhood. Each year, in the little town of Cornucopia, WI, our local “Men’s Club” would host a huge fish fry—people from all over the Midwest came to partake in the hot battered delicacy. The entire community participated by cooking and peeling potatoes, eggs, onions and preparing vats of batter for the freshly caught fish by the fishermen in our little Lake Superior port. The day always culminated in what I thought as a little kid was the biggest, best fireworks display ever (albeit I had a limited perspective back then on what “BIG” really was), it didn’t matter to me, I just loved it. The “adult” big event in July is San Diego “America’s” Pride and as I said earlier there

is much celebrating to do. There are the official events like the Festival, Parade, Rally and Block Party sponsored by San Diego Pride, along with all of the local events at all of the bars. Then there’s the Michael Mack cruise on the bay, all the Bill Hardt parties and let’s not forget all of the events for lesbians and their supporters (check out our feature on pages 34 through 38 for a full line-up). There is so much to do that it’s easy to forget what the celebration is all about, or what an achievment it is to be out and proud. We have come so far, yet there is still much work to be done. The fight is far from over.

So get out there and celebrate your pride, but let’s not forget that when the party ends, our voices are still necessary in the fight for equality.

HAPPY PRIDE EVERYBODY! Joel Martens, Editor
