In A Flash

WOMEN IN Manchester have a new female-only event to look forward to on August 11. The Run the Flash 5K offers participants the opportunity to either walk or run around Pennington Flash and is designed both for runners looking to take part in their first event or for those aiming to hit a PB.

Organised by Sports Tours International, the event is viewed as a great way of fundraising with Breakthrough Breast Cancer nominated as one of the principal charities. With an entry fee of £6 (£4 for club runners) the Run the Flash 5K is an ideal way to sign off your summer and is expected to sell out.

The new 5k joins the Run the Flash 10K (also Saturday, August 11) which was successfully launched in 2011. The 10k starts and finishes at Leigh Harriers track covering hard packed trails and tracks around the Flash. For more information visit the event website.

NORTHERN RUNNING EGUIDE 4

THERE WERE back-to-back victories in more ways than one for Garret Doherty as he repeated his success of 2011 at Manchester Backward Run. 150 people took part on May 27 as Heaton Park hosted the event for a third year running. Doherty, from Dublin, beat his own record of 07:06 by completing the mile in 06:57. Another Irishman Seamus White, came second in 08:07, while local man Alex Dempsey took third spot (08:57). The female race was won by Dalitso King from London in 11:32.

Winner Garret said: “I’m thrilled that I managed to keep my title, and I’m chuffed to bits that I’ve beaten my PB. I’m hoping to get it down even further by next year though.” For more information visit the Manchester Backward Run website.
