A&E department Town upgrade continues

gets all-clear ACCIDENT and Emergency Services at the TunbridgeWells Hospital at Pembury have been given the all-clear by the Care Quality Commission following a critical report earlier this year. The independent health regu-

lator said the department was now meeting all the required standards of quality and safety. Inspectors found that patients

were now experiencing care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. Also, there were now enough qualified, skilled and experi- enced staff to meet essential standards. At a previous inspection in January, people had been wait- ing up to 10 hours to see a doc- tor and there were not enough competent and skilled staff. Maidstone and Tunbridge

Wells NHS Trust had taken im- mediate action, implementing an action plan and giving weekly briefings to the execu- tive team and the commission. The trust had introduced measures including checks on A and E patients every two hours by a senior doctor and nurse to ensure their care was progressing, and speeding up access to specialists when needed.

MAIDSTONE Council’s ruling Tories plan to press ahead with the upgrading of lower High Street.

Energised by the popularity of Jubilee Square and plaudits for the upper High Street improve- ments, the council has set in train the procurement process for phase two, which could commence as early as Novem- ber.

Council leader Chris Garland

told the Downs Mail the coun- cil had a capital surplus of £2.3m and rising, of which

uate at the University of Kent, took a childminding pre-reg- istry course while working at Bluewater because retail was “not what I wanted to do”. Liv- ing in a child-free house, she had to make her home suitable for children up to the age of four. “So many times you hear teachers say you are ‘only a childminder’.Well, Iwanted to be a very good childminder’,” she said. “A lot of people don’t realise

how much work childminders have to put in. Before I started, I thought it was only a case of

£1.5m would be invested in a seven-month project to rejuve- nate the stretch of High Street from Mill Street to Bishops Way. He said: “This will be good

for pedestrians, the image and future of our successful town as the international recession eases and meet the demands of businesses in that area. We ex- pect it to quickly create 100 new jobs.” A detailed scheme is now

being drawn up, based largely on upper High Street designs,

with large pedestrian-only spaces but probably with planted areas. The historic can- non will remain in place. The cabinet will be asked to

give the scheme the go-ahead when it meets in August. Additional external grant funding has proved difficult, but Cllr Garland said he was “very comfortable,” both with capital reserves (expected to grow next year by at least £1.8m from Government’s NewHomes Bonus) and £4m-plus in current balances.

childminder, but I have found not being one works in my favour, as they like the fact I treat all children the same. I thoughtmy age was going to be a problem, but it works well.” Jenny is now on the waiting

putting children in front of a television with a packet of crisps. But once I began, I re- alised how much you have to do. You have to become more of a pre-school. “A lot of parents only want another parent to be their

list to get quality assured sta- tus, which means Ofsted would visit every three months, rather than three years, to prove she could offer the same service as a nursery. She has also applied for Early Years professional status, en- abling her to offer education. Jenny added: “Doing thiswas

the best decision I ever made. I would recommend it to anyone who likes children.”
