AS reported on the facing page, the sun shone when Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex opened the Weavering Dia- mond Jubilee Orchard. The council has since re- ceived a letter of thanks from Their Royal Highnesses, re- marking on the warmth and en- thusiasm of everyone present and acknowledging the effort that must have gone into mak- ing the arrangements. Chairman Ivor Davies said:
“As the council had less than seven weeks notice of the visit, organising the event was indeed very hectic. “I can’t thank enough every-
one involved, both parish coun- cillors and staff and outside organisations, in making the day so successful. They and the public who attended made it a truly memorable occasion. “There are at least 200 school-
Vacancy on
parish council A CASUAL vacancy exists in the South Ward, which the council looks to fill by co-op- tion.
Councillors have three main
areas of work: Decision-making: Through attending meetings and com- mittees with other elected members, councillors decide what and how services should be delivered, policies imple- mented, activities supported, and money spent. Monitoring: councillorsmake sure that these decisions lead to efficient and effective services by keeping an eye on how well things are working and reporting when they are not. Getting involved locally: councillors have responsibili- ties towards their constituents and local organisations. De- pending on what the councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available, this is often best achieved by becom- ing actively involved with them.
Further information can be ob- tained from the council’s web- site, noticeboards or the office.

on away to make pictures avail- able to residents who attended. Anyone who thinks they may have been photographed and who would like to see the pho- tographs should log their inter- est with the parish office. Parish clerk Pauline Bowdery added: “There are some won- derful pictures of the royal cou- ple talking to residents, but I particularly wish to identify the lady with the original pennant, the owner of the white dog and the two people (one accompa- nied by a daughter and one by a son?) who I moved to the dis- abled area.” Can anyone help?

The school is selling a CD of the spe- cially written Jubilee song sung at the event, with profits going to MaidstoneMencap.
Classrooms backing THE council is supporting planning applications for a two-storey classroom block at Invicta Grammar School and a three-storey classroom block for Valley Park School in Hunts- man Lane, Maidstone.
Hosepipe ban SOUTHERNWater has said the hosepipe ban is unlikely to be lifted in the near future because 75% of water supplies in the south east rely on aquifers which had not been replen- ished by recent rain fall.
Speed reduction plans
THE parish council has been pressing forsometime for funding to finance junction work at WaldersladeWoods Road and for the speed limit to be reduced. County Cllr Paul Carter has committed £15,000 of his mem- ber highway fund. In a recent let- ter, he explained: “Designwork is currently underway, andwhilst the scheme is not yet finalised, I can advise you that the possibility of installingaseries of traffic islands close to each of the five side junc- tions is being investigated. “The traffic islands will provide
some protection to turning vehi- cles and also narrow the main road at these locations, to prevent overtaking. “One of the islandsmay also ac- commodate an informal crossing point. Whilst physical measures can assist in this location, ulti- mately drivers must be responsi- ble for their behaviour on the highway and the county council has developed a number of inno- vative solutions to help raise awareness of road safety.” The parish council willkeep res- idents updated as things develop.
