THERE was a double celebra- tion for Bearsted Scouts when they celebrated their centenary over the Jubilee weekend. Fourteen boys got together to
form a Scout troop in Bearsted 100 years ago, just five years after Robert Baden-Powell did the same on Brownsea Island. Over the Jubilee weekend
more than 80 people camped at Bearsted Scouts’ HQ and en- joyed activities like climbing, archery and fencing. Special guests attended tomark the cen- tenary, including the English and county commissioner as well as past Scouts and leaders. On the Sunday, there was a Diamond Jubilee street party, a flag blessing for the new cente- nary flag, promise renewal, and a tree planting. The occasion

was also marked by the launch of a book, “Bearsted Scout Group; the first 100 years, 1912 – 2012”, which waswritten and published by Scout leader Kathryn Kersey. There have also been badges
made to mark the centenary, VIP visits throughout the year and a dog tag race using geocaches across the UK and abroad. For more information about Bearsted Scouts, go to
