“ H
e makes you believe anything is possible,” said a Broadcast awards
judge about one of the year’s stand- out winners, Dynamo. It would appear that he’s not the
only one achieving the impossible, judging by many of the winners of this year’s Broadcast Digital Awards.
Despite the tricky climate, many channels broke records
with outstanding content that rivalled the best of their bigger- budget terrestrial rivals. Whether it’s the aforementioned magician who helped Watch pull off the trick of attracting 1.8 million viewers – a massive 1,000% above slot average – or ITV2 beating everyone but BBC One with a stonking 3.1 million for Celebrity Juice, what this year’s awards prove is that, with quality content, you can achieve scale, volume and noise further down the EPG. You can also achieve it off the TV screen, as some of the
winners in our new awards categories demonstrate. We were encouraged by the volume of entries for Best App, Website and Game, and it’s indicative of the shift the TV industry is making and how innovative these projects are becoming. From big multiplatform projects such as Embarrassing Bodies: Live From The Clinic, which the judges described as “a landmark event in the history of multiplatform”, to newer and narrower content such as the Facejacker app, what’s apparent is not only how entertaining this content is, but also how effective it can be in conjuring up valuable data and – that magic word – revenue.
