CORNBURY FESTIVAL 2012 29 JUNE-01 JULY 2012The Great Tew Estate, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire

Sometimes, emphasis is placed more on the methodology of LARGING it than on the festival’s scheduled acts itself; beer takes precedence over beats, the action is more IN TENTS than intense, and you’re more likely to get lost in the mud than lost in the moment. Let Cornbury redress the balance then. Set it the resplendently named Great Tew Estate and promises the finest in English garden party atmosphere, for the whole family. And posh loos. Hallelujah. Te Corn-folk themselves offer the following ethos: “Like the best of England, Cornbury is eccentric, charming and irresistible - a homespun melting pot where music-lovers share pies and a glass of champagne with superstars, toffs, rockers, crooners, Morris dancers, farmers, urbanites, fashionistas, gourmet chefs and the little old ladies who make exceptional cakes.” How wonderfully quaint. Tis isn’t just some lark around a country fair though; in looking at the line-up you can see how its class sets it apart from a lesser event. Elvis Costello, James Morrison and Jools Holland – joined by Marc Almond and Ruby Turner – take the top slots over the weekend, with pop favourites Will Young, Pixie Lott, soul stars Macy Gray and Aloe Blacc and even Mr ‘House’ himself, Hugh Laurie. T IN THE PARK 2012 06-08 JULY 2012 Balado, nr Kinross. Scotland

North of the border, there’s a Scottish bastion of the country that tempts up England and Wales-living folk to the highlands en masse way more than the Loch Ness Monster, the promise of elopement at Gretna Green or the magnetic pull of Rod Stewart’s enigmatic charisma. It’s T in the Park, one of the most eagerly anticipated festivals of the summer and a celebrated calendar start of the summer. T in the Park reaches adulthood in this, its 18th year, with possibly the most star-studded line-up ever; the big names only start with the headliners, Snow Patrol, Kasabian and – the real coup – Te Stone Roses, and are added to in numbers with Te Cribs, Te Darkness, Florence and the Machine, Nicki Minaj, Noel Gallgher’s High Flying Birds, Calvin Harris, Te Horrors and megashitloads more. Classics come in the form of New Order, Doves, Happy Mondays and the aforementioned massive story of the year, Te Stone Roses revival, but the younger names make up the foundations of the day with class, seeing Emeli Sandé represent her home country, Pulled Apart By Horses, Major Lazer, Alabama Shakes, Tribes, Skrillex and an army of other acts showing T is one festival with its finger on the pulse.
