OUTDOORS GUY JEFF MORRISON

Woods and Water at our doorstep

Summer is a terrific transitional period

for hunters and fishermen, and a glorious opportunity to spend time in the Great Outdoors. Fishing, scouting and bear hunting are

just a handful of summertime activities our region has to offer. My summer home-away-from-home up

the Ottawa Valley plays host each summer to such things as casting for bass and trolling for northern pike in the gin-clear waters of Astrolabe Lake. I like spending time with my daughters catching minnows and frogs at the trailer, or back home monitoring the numerous trail cameras I have set up for whitetail. It’s a peaceful time of year, and we are fortunate to live in a city with wonderful woods and water right at our doorstep.

Chasing Quebec bruins Ontario hunters have resigned

themselves to the fact that bear hunting is a sport of the fall, but do not despair. The Province of Quebec retained its spring season; some regions have even re-introduced the autumn bear hunt. “Old Blackie” is alive and well across the river. The season in most of the Outaouais runs till June 30.

I can tell you from experience that a

black bear hunt through a Quebec Outfitter is the trip of a lifetime. Perched high in a tree- stand, watching intently for the mysterious black ghost to arrive at your bait site, gets the old ticker going! National Fishing Week By the time July rolls around, local anglers are being reminded of what their sport is really all about. The goal of July’s National Fishing Week (NFW) is to introduce anglers to this special activity we call sport-fishing. Between July 7th

and 15th , everyone is

encouraged to plan a fishing day at your nearest stream, pond, river or lake and no fishing license is required. To remind folks of the recreational value of the province’s freshwater fishery, the Ontario government waives the fishing license requirement for that week each summer. Anglers without a license must still abide by the limits set out in the Conservation permit, and all other regulations remain enforced, including size limits and protected sanctuaries. Deer draw deadline looming! Ontario deer hunters will be watching the calendar closely as antlerless deer tag validation draws to a close on July 3. This year there are three application methods available; however, your chances of being drawn for an antlerless tag is the same whether you apply by telephone, Internet or at a Service Ontario Centre. To apply over the phone call: 1 (800) 288-1155, but remember that if you have already purchased your regular deer license, you will not be able to enter the draw this way, and you must apply either online or visit a Service Ontario outlet. The deadline for telephone or Internet applications is 11:59 pm on July 3. The deadline for applications through the Government outlet is 5 pm the same day. Please note that any paperwork sent through the mail will not be accepted. New Riflescope The summer transitional period, by virtue of its name, makes it an ideal time for testing new hunting equipment. When it comes to field glass and riflescopes, I am like a kid in a candy store, and the new Bushnell scope I field-tested recently was like a party for my eyes. The new Bushnell Elite 6500

series replaces the Elite 4200 and includes the brightest and most versatile big-game scopes on the market. The 4.5 - 30X 50 mm model I tested boasts fully multi-coated optics with Bushnell’s new Ultra Wide Band () Coating to optimize light that reaches your “aiming eye” − providing an impressive 95 per cent light transmission. These Elite 6500 scopes are 100 per cent waterproof, fog proof and shockproof, and are purged using Argon gas, which is less likely to dissipate from the scope body. With ¼ M.O.A. resettable windage and elevation adjustments, and a side parallax adjustment, they

are a breeze to sight-in. After having tested several scopes over the years, I can honestly say this is the most impressive one yet, and should fit in nicely this fall at deer camp. For more information on the new Elite 6500 riflescope, log onto: www. bushnell.com/ or call 1 (800) 423- 3537 for consumer inquiries.
