LIFE MARK PAPOUSEK
There’s a hole in my bucket – list, THAT IS
My wife, Bev, and I decided to
take a vacation for a couple of weeks this past February. We had always wanted to see what Arizona was all about. So we booked a house for two
weeks at Queen Creek, a suburb of Phoenix. The intention was to relax, play some golf and enjoy each other’s company. And we did all of that plus a two-day adventure that turned out to be the icing on the cake. We decided to make the trip to the
Grand Canyon. Bev had a friend who said we should go the back way to Flagstaff and continue on to a small town called Jerome. We drove on a snake-like road at
5000 feet above sea level. I could see a large ridge in the distance that we would have to go over. From Route 69, we went on Alternate-Route 89, and up the ridge we went. The mileage said 10 miles to
Jerome. I have to tell you, between my wife yelling in my ear to keep both hands on the wheel and the
hairpin curves with very few guard- rails and only driving at 5 to 10 km per hour, I knew this was not going to be an easy drive. Oh, I forgot to say there were
signs to watch for icy roads and falling rock .We finally reached the peak and pulled over to a scenic lookout. The view was stunning, although Bev could not stop talking about the horrific drive we had just survived. I told her we still had to get down the other side. It was more of the same for the
next five miles: hairpin corners, yelling to keep both eyes on the road and “Don’t drive too close to my side!” was pretty well all I heard for the next 30 minutes. I told her what an awesome view we had of this wild country. One hour after our start up this
ridge we arrived in the town of Jerome, an very old artsy-fartsy town built on the side of this ridge that is literally straight up and down. The only parking spot was at the very
bottom of this town and decided we weren’t going to walk back up so we kept right on going for a more enjoyable drive, without the white knuckles, to Sedona. We had a brief tour of a
spectacular Sedona and then drove on to Flagstaff, where we planned to stay the night before tackling our bucket-list event. The next day we headed to the
Grand Canyon airport for a trip of a lifetime with Maverick Helicopter Tours. We rose over the Kaibab Forest
in this egg beater that was almost all glass, which made the view fantastic. A couple of minutes and whole lot of history lessons later, the pilot said: “Here we go!” and all of a sudden we were hovering over the famous Grand Canyon. And what a view it was! It was
breathtaking, almost unreal. The helicopter dropped a bit
so we could get a closer look at where the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers meet. The Little Colorado River is a light blue,
