Architecture’ judging panel for showing how female architects can: “Be well respected and successful.” The panel cited Hadid’s many accomplishments including designing the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the Guangzhou Opera House in China as evidence that she has “broken the glass ceiling more than anyone and is practically a household name. The judging panel continued, saying: “She has achieved fantastic things over the course of her career.” Hadid’s achievements are all the more remarkable in light of the fact that architecture remains one of the few industries that is still dominated by men. In fact, in the UK, the numbers of female architectural workers has actually dropped significantly
over recent years. n
It’s official; Zaha Hadid is Britain’s most influential female architect.

diary dates
May 2012 9 MAY The London Olympic Stadium by Populous
Over the coming months the RIBA will host two free exhibitions that will allow you to get up close and personal with the Olympic venues. The exhibitions will celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The first exhibition - Design Stories: The Architecture Behind 2012 – runs from 25th June to 21st September and is part of the London 2012 Festival. It will examine the architecture behind the London 2012 sporting venues and offer an Olympic viewing lounge where visitors can watch the sporting events on a big screen. Through drawings, images, videos and amazingly detailed models, the exhibition will draw back the layers of complex engineering and explore the raw ideas that inspired the
architects involved.
The second exhibition - After the Party: The Legacy of Celebration – also opens on 25th June and runs until 5th October. This exhibition explores how one- off celebratory events have, in the past, resulted in some of the most extraordinary buildings and structures ever built.
Both events will be held at RIBA HQ, 66 Portland Place, London, W1.
“At a time when the world is watching we want to celebrate the wonderful contribution architects have made to the Olympic and Paralympic sporting venues,” RIBA President Angela Brady says. “I encourage everyone to and come and see how London’s great new buildings were conceived and created.”
