CONTRACTS & PROJECTS Flood risk reduced
An enhanced capacity drainage system has been installed beneath Borough High Street, in Southwark by the utilities contractor, J Browne to disperse rainwater more effectively and reduce the risk of flooding during heavy downpours. The new drainage system has also been designed to accommodate a likely increase in surface water run off from several new buildings under construction nearby, as part of the London Bridge Quarter urban regeneration project. Browne’s work included excavations up to 6m deep, and creation of long stretches of tunnel to install new drainage gullies at 12 locations in the local area. “Flooding has long been a problem along Borough High Street because the existing system of collecting and dispersing water was installed over 50 years ago and was no longer adequate,” said Browne’s connections manager, Pat Kavanagh. The upgrade to the drainage system formed part of a larger project to enhance the carriageways and footways around Borough High Street, carried out by Transport for London’s contractor Ringway Jacobs. Levolux scrubs up at the RVC
The Royal Veterinary College’s new £5.4million Teaching and Research Centre (TaRC), situated at the heart of its Hawkshead Campus, benefits from natural ventilation and a stylish Solar Shading solution from Levolux. The TaRC building features Western Red Cedar cladding and generous glazing, including two roof lights that allow daylight to illuminate the building. Research areas and academic offices are accommodated on upper levels, while the college’s new double height entrance leads to social learning areas and flexible laboratories. To ensure optimum internal conditions are
maintained within the building and its roof plantroom, Levolux was invited to develop a solution combining its successful Infiniti Fin system, along with its Ventilation and Screening Louvres. Levolux’s Infiniti Fin system was chosen to provide effective solar control. Eleven horizontal, aerofoil-shaped Fins are fixed at 45 degrees to absorb and reflect a proportion of the sun’s rays before they enter the laboratories, thereby limiting solar heat gain in the summer. Levolux also installed 50sqm of its Ventilation Louvres to create a highly ventilated, weather- resistant plantroom enclosure. Featuring ‘S’ profile extruded aluminium louvres, with a pitch of 75mm, the louvres combine to create an attractive, seamless aesthetic. For more information visit

Permission granted
A Sussex architectural and planning expert is celebrating after getting permission for another contemporary, sustainable dwelling in the county. Determined consultant Glenn Moore of East Sussex-based GM Moore Associates successfully fought to gain approval for The Coach House, near Pevensey. His comprehensive and very
persuasive planning statement outlined how the proposed dwelling had been designed to respect and work with the landscape of the Low Weald. The Coach House, which is on an unusual sloped site, is the third extraordinary eco house that Glenn has secured permission for in the last year, including a round house. system was chosen. P3 online was selected for several reasons; one of the key features is the system’s ability to grow according to the application needs. It is efficient and cost-effective and, in conjunction with the hugely popular Crystal readers, allows access via a number of mechanisms ideally suited to a school such as Moorland. Currently over 60 doors are being managed by the system and access is achieved via a combination of sticky dots, key fobs, cards and ID badges.
