Climate Impacts Day M

ay 5 is Climate Impacts Day— a day of global witnessing around the planet at places where climate change is already happen- ing. “In Naples, we will gather for a Sunset Rally on the beach at specific locations (to be deter- mined), in order to help people visualize how sea level rise could affect our community,” says Dianne Rhodes, Climate Impacts Day coordina-

tor. “Since our effort is about ‘connecting the dots,’ we’ll be using big, blue dots to mark out what the new coastline of Naples would look like if we don’t take steps to control global warming.”

Sea level rise is one of the ways that the climate crisis is already impacting millions of people around the world. In the coming century, as glaciers melt and the oceans get warmer and expand, seas could rise by as much as seven feet, increasing the vulnerability of coastal areas to flooding and storm surge.

Photos of the group event, which will capture the “climate dot,” will be uploaded to ClimateDots.org and linked with other images from around the world to make an endless stream of pictures and images. “We want to create awareness and develop a strategy to get our city and county officials involved in creating a sustainable community,” advises Rhodes.

Healthy Eating at Government Complex Farmers’ Market

A

ccording to Stacy Revay, Healthy Communities coordinator for the Collier County Health Department, 65 percent of government employees are eating more fruits and vegetables since the opening of the Collier County Government Complex farm- ers’ market, open from 11

a.m. to 2 p.m., on Fridays. “We did a follow-up survey of 1,000 individuals six months after opening the market and were so excited to see such positive results,” says Revay. The market project is part of the Collier County Healthy Food Access program, designed to serve a diverse, low- income population that uses the Collier Area Transit transfer station at the complex. Additionally, it is intended to offer nearly 2,000 government employees a source from which to purchase healthy foods. “The market isn’t just for county Public Health Department clients, it’s also for our employ- ees, because they can walk or ride their bicycles to come here,” advises Revay, adding that the market is also open to the general public.

“This program is coming out of the Smart Growth Coali- tion, which focuses on a redevelopment structure conducive to health lifestyles,” explains Revay. Vendors were specifical- ly chosen to provide a balanced, healthy, natural food source for the Collier County community.

Location: 3301 Tamiami Trail E., next to the transit transfer station, Naples.
