How come “Home”?

You will have noticed a change on our masthead

which now designates your magazine as the On- tario Home & Gardener Living Magazine. You may be wondering why we have done this. The reasons are two-fold: 1. Gardening has grown and changed since we started this magazine 15 years ago. Then it was all

about discovering new plants, particularly flowers, and while we still have this love affair with plants, our garden habits have changed. Today, people want the whole package. They want their gardens to look like

those in England, or that they see in glossy U.S. publications. They want the hard features – the patios and the raised gardens, the waterfalls and the ponds and the bridges and arbours and pretty pathways, not to mention all the ac- coutrement that go with comfortable outdoor living. And gardeners care just as passionately about their homes and their home interiors as they do about their outdoor space. I have never yet visited a garden that wasn’t owned by someone with a lovely home interior. The garden is a reflection of the taste and sensibility of the whole person. 2. The second reason is our advertising base. Advertisers, for some reason,

equate the word “gardener” with some strange creature from another planet that just delves in the mud and never gets any help from anywhere. We can tell them till we are blue that many of you read the magazine for ideas and then look for someone else to carry out your plans, but many of the suppliers to the industry simply don’t believe this. We are hoping an emphasis on the “home” may help their understanding.

Our advertisers value your business

Meanwhile the advertisers who are in this issue do understand you and value your business, so we encourage you to support them as heartily as you can. The paving and fencing companies we have included are honest and trust- worthy contractors whom you can rely on and trust. Note, also, that we support local gardener centers and suppliers and we

hope you will, too. Their products are often grown right here and they stand behind what they sell.
